Cortem Group, always careful about the evolution of new technologies, has designed the new EVL-60B and EVL-70B series floodlights with focused optics (typical angle 40°) and different colors suitable for different lighting needs. These colors may be used in plants with explosion hazard in order to give to operators a further element to recognize hazardous situations and to alert the security personnel in charge for the evacuation or for making safe a plant’s part affected by the unusual event. For example, these floodlights can be used to advise, through their lighting, a specific event and a no-go area. The aim of this dissertation is to highlight the several types of colors used in the engineering practice of a plant, with particular reference to the safety of electrical installations and machines hoping that our contribution could be an incentive for designers, in order to adopt all measures that can further enhance the concept of "Security" in the management and maintenance of plants in general and, particularly, in those at risk of explosion and/or fire.

In the industrial plants coexist normally different lighting systems to meet specific system requirements. The lighting of field instrumentation, of external and internal tanks containing liquid and/or solids in dusty or granular state such as, for example, flour tanks. This type of lighting requires specific products as, those used for other types of lighting, are not sufficient. The distributed lighting systems use lighting fixtures placed at considerable heights (from 9 to 12 meters from the floor) that helps to illuminate evenly the area.

Discharge lamps have been considered for a long time, the best solution for lighting large areas, such as petrochemical plants or other buildings for industrial production. This is from the point of view of the relationship between the light output and the cost. The luminous efficiency of discharge lamps reaches and, in certain cases, exceeds 100 Lumen/ Watt, that is, with the same energy consumption, about 5-6 times the output of quartz-iodine lamps. Currently, with the technological improvement and the development of power components, LED lighting systems are gradually spreading into different environments, replacing the lighting fixtures with discharge lamps.
