The Laboratory of Research and Development of Cortem Group “Cortem Lab”: "Highly qualified Structure"

Saturday, 1 October 2016 PDF icon The Laboratory of Cortem Group

The great experience of the Cortem Group is the result of years of research and development of new products keeping up with the new technologies and the needs of a very demanding market in terms of safety. This is strongly revealed in our Research&Development office, where new projects of more innovative, secure and reliable products take shape every day. Safety and reliability are well-rendered in the Research&Development laboratory where all products are tested severely.

Since 2009 Cortem Group has and internal R&D laboratory equipped with all the latest equipment to perform the main tests required for the certification of explosion-proof electrical products. The laboratory is used both to test new prototypes and validate a new project, and to periodically check the products in production as required by Ex Standard.

REVF and REVN series: the correct use of cable glands for conduit pipe coupling

Saturday, 1 October 2016 PDF icon The correct use of REVF REVN series cable glands for connection to conduit pipe

In plant systems often coexist the needs for connections to end users, both directly with cable glands with simple or double seal, and with cable glands for connection to rigid or flexible conduit pipe for mechanical protection to non-armoured cable or to armoured cable exclusively with seal on the outer sheath.

While we already discussed in the previous newsletters of the cable glands with simple or double seal, we didn’t make exhaustive examples of the mounting needs of cable glands for coupling with conduit pipe.

The cable glands suitable for this purpose are divided into two categories such as:

Do you know LEDs may be damaged if in contact with particular chemicals?

Thursday, 1 September 2016 PDF icon Do you know LEDs may be damaged if in contact with particular chemicals?

During the assembly phases of lighting fixtures, different chemical components such as glues, conformal coating, grease and gaskets are used, which may contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that may pollute and damage LEDs, affecting their performance and reducing the lifetime of the product.

Therefore, testing the materials used in the assembly before the production is important, due to avoid unexpected problems on lighting fixtures already operative.

1. The Test

For this reason, Cortem Group completed a test to evaluate the performance of CREE XT-E LEDs in presence of polluting atmospheres, according to the scheme n. CLD-AP63 Rev 5c published by CREE, relating to chemical compatibility.

The meaning of “U” and “X” characters in the Ex marking

Many information must be reported on the marking plate of equipment and components addressed to hazardous areas which often cause several doubts and also disagreements among technicians and inspections supervisors.

The EN 60079-0 standard brings the general Rules about electrical equipment for explosive atmospheres due to the gas presence.

1. The information which must be reported on the marking plate

As EN 60079-0 standard reports, the electrical equipment must be readable marked on the main side of it.

The marking, which can be represented by a firm plate or by a direct marking upon the device or component's body, must report:

How to choose a LED lighting fixture

Friday, 1 July 2016 PDF icon How to choose a LED lighting fixture
Nowadays many manufacturers of lighting fixtures offer one or more LED’s products. One of the main difference from the past is the quantity of technical features which customers must evaluate. Considering a lighting fixture with traditional light source, in order to describe lighting specifications, it is often enough knowing the absorbed power and the bright source.

Ventilation in classified areas

Friday, 1 July 2016 PDF icon Ventilation in classified areas
All the operators which daily work in plants know how much warm could interfere on the normal working development and how heavier is the right management of the whole activities. When we talk about plants installed in classified areas, that are in places with potentially explosive atmosphere, the ventilation, which provides a continuous air renewal, is really important to avoid the development of clouds which could be triggered by a spark or by an equipment over-temperature.

Drilling 'Ex d' junction boxes

All the operations that might affect the certification of an Ex product must be done only by who owns the full conformity certificate for the product. However, there is a special case which commonly occurs on the market that does not follow this guideline: drilling of 'Ex d' junction boxes.

The importance of signs and colors

Tuesday, 1 March 2016 PDF icon The importance of signs and colors in industry and ex plant
Cortem Group, always careful about the evolution of new technologies, has designed the new EVL-60B and EVL-70B series floodlights with focused optics (typical angle 40°) and different colors suitable for different lighting needs. These colors may be used in plants with explosion hazard in order to give to operators a further element to recognize hazardous situations and to alert the security personnel in charge for the evacuation or for making safe a plant’s part affected by the unusual event. For example, these floodlights can be used to advise, through their lighting, a specific event and a no-go area. The aim of this dissertation is to highlight the several types of colors used in the engineering practice of a plant, with particular reference to the safety of electrical installations and machines hoping that our contribution could be an incentive for designers, in order to adopt all measures that can further enhance the concept of "Security" in the management and maintenance of plants in general and, particularly, in those at risk of explosion and/or fire.

OHSAS 18001 certification

Monday, 1 February 2016 PDF icon OHSAS 18001 certification
Almost every day the news report cases of accidents at work, very often fatal. These implicate ethical issues related to occupational safety and protection of life, that should be a priority in every Country, and costs for the society and for the companies. In particular, the industrial, petrochemical, construction and manufacturing sectors are, by their nature, those in which are recorded the highest percentage of accidents. To reduce the risks, companies of all sizes and in all sectors must implement management systems which ensure the health and safety of work places. Few years ago has been defined worldwide the OHSAS 18001 standard, suitable for all organizations wishing to establish formal procedures to manage the health and the safety threats in the company, implementing a control system and, above all, a continuous improvement, to ensure and increase the safety and health of workers.

Lighting systems in hazardous areas

Friday, 1 January 2016 PDF icon The lighting of tanks in hazardous areas
In the industrial plants coexist normally different lighting systems to meet specific system requirements. The lighting of field instrumentation, of external and internal tanks containing liquid and/or solids in dusty or granular state such as, for example, flour tanks. This type of lighting requires specific products as, those used for other types of lighting, are not sufficient. The distributed lighting systems use lighting fixtures placed at considerable heights (from 9 to 12 meters from the floor) that helps to illuminate evenly the area.
